Abstract

Over 90% of global trade in goods is conducted through maritime transport, making the safety of port entry and exit waterways a critical concern for port managers worldwide. These areas are bottlenecks due to intense ship traffic, and traditional physical buoys are commonly used to guide navigation. Enhancing these systems with artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual buoys can significantly improve maritime safety. This research proposes the integration of virtual navigational aid signals, supported by AI, with existing physical buoys and maritime technologies such as Automatic Identification Systems (AIS), Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS), and ARPA radar. The study focuses on the KHOWR-E MUSA Channel at the Khomeini Port Complex, one of the longest and most challenging port waterways in Iran, spanning approximately 42 nautical miles. The goal is to reduce human error in navigation and increase the efficiency and safety of vessel traffic in these critical maritime corridors.
