The Environmental Footprint of War: A Comprehensive Review of the Environmental Consequences of Armed Conflicts and Strategies for Mitigating Ecological Damage
Assistant Professor, Department of Water Science and Engineering, University of Maragheh
Abstract
Armed conflicts are among the most significant drivers of environmental degradation and major threats to global ecosystem stability. The environmental consequences of warfare extend far beyond the duration of active hostilities; through persistent soil, water, and atmospheric pollution, habitat destruction, and the disruption of essential ecosystem services, these impacts endure for decades post-conflict. Despite the increasing prominence of this issue in environmental and international legal discourses, comprehensive studies providing an integrated analysis of these multifaceted impacts remain limited. Consequently, this research aims to elucidate the critical environmental consequences of armed conflicts and propose strategic frameworks to mitigate ecocide and conflict-induced environmental damage. Adopting a qualitative review methodology, this study utilizes library-based research and systematic analysis of scholarly articles, scientific reports, and authoritative documents published over the past 25 years. The findings reveal that military activities, in addition to direct ecosystem destruction, contribute to long-term environmental degradation, reduced carbon sequestration capacity, destruction of vital infrastructure, and the significant attenuation of ecological resilience. Furthermore, the growing recognition of ecocide as an international crime reflects a paradigm shift in environmental law and an intensified global emphasis on accountability. Ultimately, this study emphasizes the necessity of integrating environmental considerations into military planning, developing binding international legal frameworks, strengthening environmental impact assessments, and expanding international cooperation to mitigate the destructive impacts of warfare and achieve sustainable development.
